Gamecocks Talk Kamilla's WNBA Decision, Looking To Send Her Out On Top
Kamilla Cardoso announced earlier this week that she would indeed be moving onto the WNBA at the season's conclusion. This means that the Final Four is essentially the last hurrah for the senior center from Brazil. While this reality will likely rest in the back of her mind this weekend, she isn't the only one who's thought about what's ahead for herself both in the Final Four and in the future.
In an open locker room session on Thursday afternoon, I asked Raven Johnson, Chloe Kitts, Ashlyn Watkins, and Sania Feagin if Kamilla's eventual departure gives them extra motivation to try and win it all this weekend. Raven talked about how prepared she thinks Cardoso is for the next stage of her basketball career.
"I think she's ready for the next level. She's definitely gonna kill [it]," Johnson lamented. "Just the way she grew [and] developed in the game, I just think her family's gonna be very proud of her because the way that she developed from when she first got here to now and the way that she thinks of the game, I think she has a great IQ for the game, and I think at the next level, the coaches are just gonna develop her more."
Kitts made it clear that she and the rest of the team are trying to enjoy every moment they have left with Kamilla.
"[We're] just spending as much time with her as we can, and obviously, on the court, it's just so fun playing with her, and it's very unfortunate that we only have a couple of games left with her, but I'm just super happy and proud of her."
Sania, who's been teammates with Cardoso in the Gamecock frontcourt the longest, said that she'll "really miss Kamilla and her energy and her laughter and talk." As far as sending Kamilla out John Elway style is concerned, Ashlyn Watkins was to the point.
"[These are] her final college games, and we just wanna win it all for her because she's been through a lot."
