Recently-Offered LB Sets Official Visit Date With South Carolina
One of the biggest takeaways from this off-season for the Gamecocks has been the speed and urgency the coaching staff has shown with recruits. The Gamecocks offered a linebacker out of Virginia just four days ago, and he already has an official visit set with South Carolina. Fred Johnson, an unranked LB in the class of 2024, will be visiting Columbia this weekend on an official visit with the team.
Johnson has flown under the radar as a recruit for much of the cycle, but his recruitment is starting to gain steam as we head into the Summer. Since the start of March, Johnson has picked up offers from schools such as Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Duke, Appalachian State, James Madison, and many more.
Johnson plays both ways at his high school, serving as a receiver and linebacker. Though he shows promise as a receiver, coaches have indicated a desire for Johnson thanks to his excellent tracking skills as a box defender. He is more than capable of moving from sideline to sideline tracking down ball-carriers.
It was reported that Johnson was supposed to visit Rutgers this weekend but canceled in favor of the Gamecocks. Having him cancel with another school and set up an official visit this quickly should serve as a sign of optimism that South Carolina can lock him up.Â
