Gamecocks Score Big: Adding a Productive Transfer Linebacker
Originally a dual-threat quarterback from Locust Grove, GA, Demetrius Knight kicked off his high school career. As a three-star recruit, he committed to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the class of 2019. However, his role transitioned during his time at Georgia Tech, where he played as a linebacker from 2019 to 2021. As a QB, he attempted one pass, completing it for 4 yards.
During his three years as a linebacker for the Yellow Jackets, Knight posted solid stats:
- Solo tackles: 25
- Assists: 17
- Total tackles: 42
- Tackles for loss (TFL): 3.0
- Sacks: 1
After concluding his stint with the Yellow Jackets, Knight entered the transfer portal, eventually landing at Charlotte. His time with the 49ers proved highly productive, accumulating 96 tackles, 5.5 TFLs, and 3 interceptions in the past season. Following this standout performance, he once again entered the transfer portal, seeking a chance to play on a bigger stage.
The Gamecocks secured Knight's commitment, a significant acquisition for the team. This announcement comes shortly after preseason freshman All-American and former four-star linebacker Grayson "Pup" Howard declared his intention to transfer to Florida the next day. While Howard was potentially a year away from securing significant playing time, Knight's commitment fills a crucial gap for the Gamecocks.
Returning talents such as Debo Williams and Bam Martin-Scott, along with the formidable presence of Mohamed Kaba when healthy, contribute to the team's strength. The addition of Knight helps compensate for the losses, including Howard and Stone Blanton, the former Under Armour All-American who recently announced his decision to transfer. The Gamecocks are fortifying their linebacker corps with this key acquisition.
