South Carolina signed tight end Michael Smith, who committed to the Gamecocks on January 24th. He is the 4th ranked tight end in the country per 247sports. Smith is primarily a receiving tight end who has shown the ability to make contested catches and create separation with roughly 4.5 speed.

Prospect: Michael Smith

School: Calvary Day School (Savannah, GA)

Projected Position: Tight End

Size: 6-4 and 230 lbs.

Athleticism: Smith is the type of Tight End that creates a massive mismatch for some defenses. He is too fast for most linebackers and physical for most safeties or nickel corners.

Instincts: His ability to run to open space during his route progression and after the catch is excellent. Not only the speed but the ability to break tackles.

Bottom Line: Michael Smith is a tight end who may be limited in time this season; however, he may play an essential role for this offense with just how athletic and challenging it is to defend for most linebackers. While his blocking will need work in college, what he brings to the table as a receiving threat makes up for it.
