South Carolina Reportedly In Contact With Several Portal Wideouts
With the recent flip of Vanderbilt transfer wide receiver Jayden McGowan from the South Carolina Gamecocks to the Boston College Eagles, Shane Beamer and his staff only have one transfer wideout in the fold so far in this transfer portal cycle, and that's Coastal Carolina wideout Jared Brown. With only eight scholarship wide receivers currently in the fold for the 2024 season, the Gamecocks desperately need to find likely two more receivers out of the portal.
Based on the events of the past 24 hours, a new target list is forming at the position. The first bit of news that was reported by Pete Nakos of On3 Sports on Wednesday afternoon was that the Gamecocks had conveyed interest in a transfer wideout from Miami of Ohio in Gage Larvadian.
Gage led the Mid-American Conference in receiving yards in 2023 with 679 on 42 catches, scoring six touchdowns. Although Larvadian originally posted on X that he had received an official offer from South Carolina, that post has since been mysteriously taken down.
SportsTalk Media Network reported late last night that the Gamecocks also had interest in portal wide receivers Jabre Barber and Elijah Sarratt of Troy and James Madison, respectively. Barber, named a Third-team All-Sun Belt selection this Fall, caught 75 passes for 999 receiving yards and five touchdowns, leading his team in the first two categories. Sarratt was named a First-team All-Sun Belt selection in 2023 and reeled in 82 throws for 1,191 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, all career highs for the rising junior.
The last transfer wideout we want to touch on in this piece is Texas A&M wide receiver Jordan Anthony, who South Carolina's staff has reportedly contacted, according to The Portal Report. Anthony appeared in three games in 2023, catching three passes for fourteen receiving yards.
The Gamecocks have a unique connection here that could help them recruit Jordan, as the Mississippi native happens to star in track and field. In 2023, Anthony was named an indoor first-team All-American in the 60-meter dash and won silver medals for the Kentucky Wildcats in that same event at the conference and national level. His associate head track and field coach in Lexington was Tim Hall, who's now the head track and field and cross country coach at South Carolina.
