After going 5-7 in year three and missing out on the postseason for the first time in his tenure, South Carolina’s head football coach Shane Beamer knew going into the most pivotal offseason to date in his young head coaching career that he needed to take an in-depth look at every aspect of his program. On Tuesday, he spoke with one of the most recognizable college football media personalities, Josh Pate of Late Kick With Josh Pate, and was eventually asked (paraphrasing here) how much validation he needs in the information-gathering process when deciding on whether or not he needs to make a change.

This is what Shane had to say in response:

“Obviously, the most recent season wasn’t good enough, but let’s look at the big picture of what we’ve done, and for me, it [involves] talking to a lot of people. I’m probably too slow at times or very thorough when it comes to making a decision, whether it be a staff member or whatever we’re doing in the program and want to hear different ideas, and I talked to our players,” Beamer stated. “I really wanted to get their thoughts on stuff, essentially just had them kind of give me feedback on every single area of the program - Just wanted to hear their thoughts on what we’re doing in nutrition, on what we’re doing in terms of team travel the day before the game, our schedule, coaching, the weight room, training room, equipment room, just areas of concern [or] things that we can be better at. So gathered all their thoughts and then kind of sat back and looked at the big picture and said, ‘Ok, what do we need to do to be better going forward?’ And sometimes that [involves] making a change, which we did in some instances, and sometimes that’s continuing to do what we’ve been doing, but let’s find a way to be even better,” Shane articulated. “There was a lot of soul searching throughout our building in all departments this year about, you know, ‘Ok, we weren’t good enough,’ and we’ve kind of talked about it as a team this year that everything we do this season like it’s personal. You know, it’s personal accountability.”

After bringing in a Top 10 portal class and several new assistant coaches, Beamer hopes to make 2024 a bounce-back season for the Gamecocks.
