Where ESPN's FPI Ranks Every Pac-12 Team After Undefeated Week 1
College football is full of twists and turns in every direction, but one thing that can only be described as irony is the Pac-12 being the lone conference to finish opening weekend unscathed.
Obviously we have known that the conference was poised for a huge year, but that has often been overshadowed by the fact that by this time next year the conference likely won't exist. USC who is the lone team to have played two games already, UCLA, Oregon and Washington are all leaving for the Big Ten, the four corner schools are leaving for the Big 12, and Stanford and Cal are off to the ACC.
Now that the season is finally here, many who were often distracted by realignment are realizing just how good the conference is. As is ESPN's FPI, which boosted the rankings of all but three of the teams after this past week. Let's take a look at where every team in the conference ranks according to ESPN's FPI.
12. Arizona State
ESPN FPI Ranking: No. 89
The Sun Devils took the biggest hit of any of the teams in the conference, dropping 21 spots. They were up by two scores at halftime, but a major weather delay may have killed their momentum as they went on to only score three points the rest of the game, beating Southern Utah 24-21.
11. Colorado
ESPN FPI Ranking: No. 71
Colorado had the biggest win in college football this past weekend, pulling off a major upset against No. 17 TCU on the road. The Buffs displayed an elite offense that should instill fear in future opponents. They made the biggest jump in the Pac-12, jumping up 31 spots.
10. Stanford
ESPN FPI Ranking: No. 69
Despite being favored by as few as three points against Hawai'i the Cardinal showcased an exciting new offense and quarterback in a double digit victory.
9. Arizona
ESPN FPI Ranking: No. 54
The Wildcats beat up on in-state rival Northern Arizona as they should have. However, surely the win felt good when you consider they lost to this same team a couple years ago.
8. Washington State
ESPN FPI Ranking: No. 53
Washington State made a fairly large jump going up 14 spots after they throttled Colorado State. The Cougars are looking to emerge as dark-horses again this season.
7. UCLA
ESPN FPI Ranking: No. 39
The Bruins may already have a quarterback controversy on their hands as Dante Moore came in as relief of starter Ethan Garbers and impressed. Their game against Costal Carolina was close until the fourth when Moore hit on a 62-yard touchdown pass to give UCLA an eight point lead that helped seal the victory.
6. Cal
ESPN FPI Ranking: No. 30
Cal jumped up 18 spots following their thrashing of North Texas that saw them score 58 points. They got a fantastic performance from NC State transfer Ben Finley who replaced the injured Sam Jackson V at quarterback.
5. Oregon State
ESPN FPI Ranking: No. 24
Oregon State shot into the top-25 and also got an amazing performance from Clemson transfer DJ Uiagalelei who accounted for five touchdowns in their victory over San Jose State.
4. Washinton
ESPN FPI Ranking: No. 16
The Huskies started off slow as they were held scoreless for the first quarter against Boise State, but ended up scoring 28 points in the second quarter alone. Their offenses was as explosive as expected, it just took some time.
3. Utah
ESPN FPI Ranking: No. 15
Utah actually fell three spots despite dominating Florida with a backup quarterback. They were physical on defense, and Bryson Barnes delivered on offense.
2. Oregon
ESPN FPI Ranking: No. 11
The Ducks beat up on in-state foe Portland State hanging 81 points on them. The highlight of this game wasn't Bo Nix, Bucky Irving, or even Troy Franklin but how many pushups their mascot ended up having to do. They moved up two spots in ESPN's FPI.
1. USC
ESPN FPI Ranking: No. 5
The Trojans beat up on another Mountain West team, this time with a better performance on defense holding Nevada to just two touchdowns. They went on to score 66 points behind Caleb Williams' five touchdowns.
