Grading San Diego State, SMU and other expansion candidates
The offseason storylines regarding the Pac-12's plans pos-USC and UCLA have been all over the map.
For every report that indicates the conference is going to go under and implode, there are a few more indicating that they are on track to secure a deal and expand. On the latest episode of Locked on Buffs, I interviewed Pac-12 insider John Canzano and discussed where the Pac-12 stands based on what his sources are hearing. We also discussed the best candidates for expansion, and why some teams are much better fits than others.
Of the programs that have been linked with the Pac-12, we discussed San Diego State, SMU, Colorado State, Tulane, and Rice.
Canzano broke down what the Pac-12 is looking for in a school, and even compared the Pac-12 expansion process to that of the Big 12's expansion process which appears to have different criteria.
The Pac-12 is currently going the steps of securing a media rights deal which we also discussed. Canzano believes that the conference should have something by July, but as we have learned throughout this entire process it is difficult to put a timetable on how soon the Pac-12 will get something done.
