Quarterbacks In The Transfer Portal That Can Change The Landscape Of College Football
The college football regular season is over, which means there are only a handful of teams that will be playing this weekend in their respective conference title games.
The rest of the teams in college football, while they may give it a peak, are not overly concerned with who wins. Instead, their focus will be solely on the transfer portal which is open to graduate transfers, and will open up for everyone else on December 4. As usual, the position that everyone will be looking out for in the transfer portal is the quarterback position.
While names like Stanford's Ari Patu, Michigan State's Noah Kim, and even Texas Tech's Tyler Shough among many others are interesting, it is unlikely that all of these quarterbacks will determine the fate of next season.
There are however a handful of quarterbacks who could propel one lucky program to a higher level, and there are quite more than a handful of teams that could use better quarterback play. So, with the portal constantly changing and surprising college football fans, here are four quarterbacks that could possibly change the landscape of college football next year.
DJ Uiagalelei (Oregon State)
Following the departure of Johnathan Smith to Michigan State, DJ Uiagalelei decided to not stick around in Corvallis and will be looking for his third school. Being that he is so new to the market, he hasn't been connected to a certain program as of yet, but schools to look out for are Oregon where he could reunite with his brother and replace Bo Nix, or Michigan State to follow Smith. Before committing to Oregon State in last year's transfer cycle, he was projected to end up at Hawaii, but following a strong year at Oregon State, he should be in high demand for a contender.
Riley Leonard (Duke)
After Mike Elko took the Texas A&M job, Riley Leonard may as well already had a locker at Notre Dame, as that was where many analysts and fans were projecting he'd go. Now that he is actually in the portal with a tag that prevents him from being contacted by other programs, Notre Dame still seems to be the favorite landing spot. If he were to go there, Notre Dame would have yet another top transfer quarterback to try and help them get back to the College Football Playoff. He's a great athlete, that will add another dynamic to an offense wherever he ends up.
Will Howard (Kansas State)
Howard is the top-ranked player in the transfer portal at the moment and is a true dual-threat. He has shown the ability to consistently hurt defenses with his arm and legs. He is expected to have interest from all of the top programs that have quarterback issues, and a fresh start where he won't have to split reps may lead to him exploding in 2024. He is linked to programs such as Washington, Kentucky, and Auburn.
Will Rogers (Mississippi State)
While his numbers are mediocre at best for this season, Will Rogers was a victim of scheme malpractice. After thriving in the air raid offense in years prior, the Bulldogs strayed away from the Late Mike Leach's offense. They saw less production from Rogers, and head coach Zach Arnett was shown the door after one year. Assuming Rogers doesn't return to Starkville to play for Jeff Lebby, he can certainly thrive in a high-octane offense like Washington's.
