Stanford coach Troy Taylor's first home game debut on the Cardinal staff was blemished by the program he previously built, Sacramento State, on Saturday. For the third time in program history, the Hornets secured a victory over a Pac-12 opponent, and for the first time since 2005 against UC Davis, Stanford fell to an FCS school.

Following the shocking 30-23 outcome, the Hornets' quarterback Kaiden Bennett grinned his way out of the stadium with a cowboy hat sitting on his head. Taylor, however, directly approached the media where only one or two interviewers made it in time to speak with him.

"Really talented players," Taylor said of the Hornets. "Really good coaching staff. They did a great job. They were ready to play and they did some nice things schematically and obviously the guys are really competitive. They did a great job."

On the field, Bennett was 21-of-33 pass attempts for a total of 279 yards and recorded 100 rushing yards and a score. Included in his passing statistics is the game winning connection with Marcus Fulcher after barely avoiding a sack, only leaving 1:32 on the clock, securing the victory.

Sacramento State extended its regular-season winning streak (22) by defeating the Cardinal.

Even though Taylor has a four-year history with the Hornets as a former coach, friend and recruiter, he is focusing all his attention on his current team, the Cardinal, and what adjustments can be made on the field for Stanford in coming weeks.

"I'm a Stanford Cardinal now," Taylor said. "So really just focusing on our team. Obviously wished them luck moving forward. Just really focused on our guys and their mentality and being able to respond and come back next week ready to play."
