Following the 2022 season, Stanford fans and the new staff alike knew that they would be witnessing a very interesting quarterback battle between Ari Patu, Ashton Daniels, and incoming freshman Myles Jackson.

The Cardinal lost last year's starter, Tanner McKee, to the NFL Draft meaning that one of these extremely inexperienced quarterbacks would be taking the reins in Troy Taylor's first year. That may still be the case, but now there is another horse in the race, as the Cardinal landed Syracuse transfer quarterback Justin Lamson.

The El Dorado Hills, California native and Oak Ridge product is a former three-star who spent the past couple seasons at Syracuse, and worked his way up to being the backup prior to 2022 but went down with a season ending injury during spring ball.

Lamson is the perfect quarterback for Taylor's system, as on top of having a great arm he is also a dynamic athlete who was at one point an all-state safety in high school. Coming out of high school, Lamson ranked as a top-20 dual threat quarterback and a top-50 prospect out of California. He accumulated 3,576 total yards and 29 touchdowns in his junior season for Oak Ridge High School, who he led to a Sac-Joaquin section championship.

His performance led to him being named 2019 NorCal Offensive Player of the Year, as well as 2019 Sacramento Bee Player of the Year.

Lamson marks the fifth transfer that Taylor and his staff have brought in, and also technically marks the first Power 5 transfer that the Cardinal have recruited and brought in themselves as Oklahoma safety Patrick Fields approached the previous staff about playing after getting into Stanford.

Taylor made it very clear during spring that he was open to bringing in another quarterback, and Lamson will certainly be a contender for the starting job.
