Whilst playing in a torrential downpour, the Stanford Cardinal were able to hand Washington State their fifth-straight loss on Saturday winning 10-7.

The game was expected to be an offensive shootout with both defenses ranking near the bottom of the country, but thanks to the weather it turned into a defensive standoff. At one point, the longest play of the game was 10 yards.

The two teams took turns punting for the most part until Cam Ward worked his magic in the second quarter for the Cougars. After evading a sack that would have backed them up by at least 15 yards thanks to defenders slipping right off of him and his shirt ripping when it was grabbed, the Cougars hit on a 39-yard pass. A few plays later, Ward found Josh Kelly for the touchdown to go up 7-0.

That lead lasted until late in the third quarter after Justin Lamson took over for the Cardinal, connecting with Sam Roush for a 27-yard gain before being tackled at the one. Lamson powered in the score the next play, tying up the game at 7.

It wasn't until late in the fourth quarter that the Cardinal notched a field goal to make it 10-7, as Ashton Daniels connected with Elic Ayomanor for a 30-yard gain to move the Cardinal closer. However, it. was again Lamson coming in clutch for Stanford as he ran for 21 yards over three plays, including a crucial fourth down.

However, the next fourth down that rolled around, Stanford turned to Joshua Karty to drill the field goal which he did from 31 yards out.

After stopping the Cougars the next drive, Stanford was able to run the clock out to secure the win.

Stanford is now 3-6 on the year, and Washington State who was at one point ranked is now 4-5.
