Tanner McKee goes from first round potential to nearly undrafted in a recent NFL Mock Draft
To start the 2022 season many sites and NFL Draft experts viewed Tanner McKee as the prototypical quarterback that had first round potential in the NFL Draft.
Following a lackluster season from Stanford that saw them win just three games, have one of the worst offenses in the country, and also saw the program's winningest coach of all time step down, McKee's stock has plummeted. The former top-50 recruit was plagued by an outdated system and a very poor offensive line, and when you combine that with the fact that he's not the quickest quarterback it wasn't a great mix.
McKee threw for 2,947 yards with 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions, and while those numbers weren't enough to keep him in first round discussions there was a point in time in draft circles that saw him as a possible second or third round pick. That was until the latest edition of CBS Sports' NFL Mock Draft that had McKee being selected in the seventh round with the No. 254 pick by the New York Giants, which is just five selections before the infamous "Mr. Irrelevant" selection.
This quarterback class is extremely top heavy with guys like Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Anthony Richardson, Will Levis, and Hendon Hooker all expected to be selected in the first.
Only time will tell as to how NFL teams view McKee, but the clock may have struck 12 when it comes to some experts viewing him as an NFL caliber quarterback.
