Richard Sherman reveals the moment he knew he was done in the NFL
Former Stanford receiver and corner Richard Sherman is arguably one of the best corners of this generation, being that he was the face of the Seattle Seahawks' Legion of Boom.
The extremely vocal corner that wasn't shy about letting someone know if he thought they were sorry accomplished a lot during his decade-long career, being a First-team All-Pro three times and Second-team twice. He also led the NFL in interceptions in 2013, and to cap it all off is a Super Bowl champ. However, despite being one of the best players of this past decade he recently revealed on his podcast "The Richard Sherman Podcast" there was a specific moment during his 2021 stint with the Tampa Buccaneers that he knew it was time to retire.
When talking to Eagles offensive lineman Lane Johnson, the two were discussing how difficult it is for skill position players to recover and why they don't age as gracefully on the field as linemen. Johnson explained he thinks that lineman have it easier because they are able to utilize their savvy, and they don't have to run down the field.
Sherman concurred and added a personal sentiment of just how hard it is for a skill player when they are aging, as he revealed his experience trying to cover Eagles receiver DeVonta Smith. While he was covering him, Sherman revealed he injured his groin but was unable to come out of the game due to the Eagles being in a hurry-up offense. He later explained that he just didn't have it in him to keep up with the youngsters anymore.
Sherman expressed that while he was trying to cover Smith and chasing the former Alabama star around in his head he was saying ‘please don’t throw him the ball, please.’ "
"My coach is looking at me on the sideline like, ‘Hey, you wanna come out, you wanna come out?’ “I’m like, ‘Yeah, but they’re in a hurry-up,’ so I’m like bailing out. At that moment, I was like yeah, this is probably my last year. I don’t got it for these young dudes right here.”
2021 was in fact his final season in the NFL, and Sherman spent this past season as an analyst for Amazon Prime Video's 'Thursday Night Football' coverage and is also hosting a podcast for The Volume. On top of that, you can also find him on Fox's reality show 'Stars on Mars' where he and other celebrities such as Ronda Rousey, Lance Armstrong, Ariel Winterm and Marshawn Lynch compete in challenges that simulate what it might be like to be an astronaut on Mars.
Unfortunately for Sherman he was recently eliminated in episode three. However, now that he is no longer chasing young receivers around he has more time to venture out.
