The 2023 Ryder Cup kicked off on Friday in Rome, but for the fifth straight year, Tiger Woods was not a participant.

In an article by Sporting News,' Ben Miller revealed the reason Woods was not one of the 13 players selected, and unfortunately for what can only be considered one of the best golfers to ever pick up a club, there were no real reasons as to why he should have been added. Miller explained that Woods has only played in eight tournaments in three years, which eliminated him from qualifying for a spot automatically or really being considered to be added by team captain Zach Johnson.

Woods has been plagued by injuries as of late, and Johnson expressed that he'd only consider Woods if he were able to perform expressing "if he [Tiger Woods] was putting up some numbers and some scores" and "showing some sign of being competitive."

Johnson also revealed that Woods wouldn't be attending due to the fact he is busy at this time. Something Miller confirmed, saying that Woods is opening a sports bar business with singer/actor Justin Timberlake and has also been serving as a caddie for his 14-year-old son Charlie who recently won a regional qualifier tournament.

Just because he isn't playing or attending doesn't mean he won't be helping as Johnson explained that he still offers support and advice via text.

"He's always in our corner," said Johnson. "At this point, it's more encouragement on his side whether he's texting the guys or texting the vice-captains and captains.

As for how the Ryder Cup is going after the first outing, the teams need a score of 14.5 to win, with Europe currently sitting at 6.5 and Team USA sitting at 1.5.
