Stanford target Trent Perry backs off USC commitment, gives Kyle Smith chance to make statement
The Stanford basketball roster is currently quite empty following the firing of head coach Jerod Haase, with nine players heading out via the portal or graduation.
New head coach Kyle Smith has inherited one three-star signee from the previous regime in point guard Elijah Crawford, and he may have a chance to take a swing at a top-30 recruit Trent Perry who is no longer committed to USC after head coach Andy Enfield left for the SMU gig.
Perry was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in California, is a two-time CIF open division state champion at Harvard-Westlake, and is a McDonald’s All-American. When he chose the Trojans, he initially picked them over Gonzaga, Oregon, Colorado, TCU and Stanford.
He did reveal to ESPN he will be "starting fresh" with his recruitment, "while utilizing the relationships I already built."
Perry took an official visit to Stanford on September 30. This past season he averaged 18.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 1.8 steals per game while shooting 47.2% from three.
