Tara VanDerveer Ties Coach K's All-Time Win Record After Blowout Win Over Oregon
On Friday, Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer came one step closer to officially being the winningest college basketball coach in history.
No. 8 Stanford dismantled Oregon by a score of 88-63 despite Cameron Brink going out with an injury in the first half. The win moved Stanford to 16-2 on the year, but more importantly, moved VanDerveer's to 1,202, thus tying her with Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski for the most all-time.
Stanford started off as hot as they come, going up by a score of 20-0 until Oregon stormed back in the second quarter to cut the lead to five. Stanford forward Kiki Iriafen took over, as she finished the game with 21 point, 15-rebound double-double. Talana Lepolo added 13 points of her own, Elene Bosgana added 11, and off the bench freshman Nunu Agara scored 12, and Brook Demetre contributed 10.
When talking to the Pac-12 Network after the game, VanDerveer attributed the win to all of the great players and teams that she has had through the years.
"It's a tribute to the great teams I've had, the great places I've worked," VanDerveer told the Pac-12 Network. "It's been really exciting because so many people have reached out to me. It's great for women's basketball that there's a lot of attention. I work at a great place, and I have so much support."
VanDerveer has a chance to reach the magic number of 1,203 on Sunday as they play host to Oregon State (15-2).
