Bats explode for the Rochester Red Wings en route to their first win of the season 11-4 over at the Syracuse Mets. With the loss, the Mets fall to 2-3 on the year.

Game 2 of the first home regular season series started rough when the Mets had to suit up without Brett Baty. He picked up an injury to his right hand last night in his 2nd at-bat. Everything looks okay for the young star, but he was kept out of the game as a precaution with his right thumb inflammation.

The game opened up with offense on both sides. Travis Blankenhorn, a player Syracuse fans are familiar with from last season, brought in the first run on a double to right to bring in Darren Baker. Matt Adams brought in the other first inning run for the Red Wings when he hit a sac fly to center which brought home Lucius Fox.

The Mets had a response in the form of Francisco Alvarez. He went 0-4 last night but responded in the first with a 2-run big fly to center, his 2nd of the season. In the bottom half of the 2nd the Mets took their only lead of the game when Ronny Mauricio added a solo shot, his first AAA home run.

The lead didn’t last beyond the 4th as Wilson Garcia leveled the game at 3 when he put one over the right center wall in a 1-2 count. In the 5th the lead grew as Blankenhorn did more damage with an RBI single and Matt Adams made it 7-3 with a 3-run bomb to right. Ronny Mauricio added his 2nd of the season and made it 7-4 with another solo homer on a line over the right center wall.

Blankenhorn would continue the strong performance with a 2-strike homer in the top of the 7th which was followed up with a Wilson Garcia 2-run shot that made it 10-4. In the top half of the 9th Matt Adams put the final touches on game with the team’s 5th homer of the game.

Cory Abbott got the start for the Red Wings and after those first two innings really settled in for what turned into a quality 5 innings. He kept the damage to just 3 runs on 5 hits and struck out 3 in the process. Jose Ferrer was the first in relief and gave up the only other run as Gerson Moreno and Jordan Weems shut the door on the final frames.

Humberto Mejía started for the Mets and had a rocky four innings but was realistically the best arm on the day for Syracuse. He lasted 4 innings and gave up 4 hits, 3 earned runs and picked up 4 strikeouts. William Woods took over in the 5th and lasted just one frame with 4 runs (3 earned) and 4 hits. Jose Chacin finished off the final 4 innings and struggled largely with the big fly. Over his time on the bump he gave up 3 homers, 4 earned runs and 4 hits with 4 strikeouts to go with it. As a staff giving up 5 homers is going to make it extremely difficult on the lineup to just keep the team in the game. Nobody should worry too much after they shutout the Red Wings the night before but pitch location and avoiding barrels should be focus going into Thursday.

Standout at the plate for the Mets was certainly Mauricio as he went 3 for 4 with 2 solo shots. The Red Wings had multiple bats shine on a cloudy Wednesday afternoon with 5 players in the lineup having at least 2 hits. Matt Adams did have 5 RBIs while Garcia and Blankenhorn added the other 6 with 3 a piece.

Syracuse now sits at 2-3 on the year and the Red Wings will return to NBT Bank stadium at 6:35 on Thursday night.
