Jim Boeheim's Career, Legacy Speak For Themselves
Jim Boeheim, one of the best coaches in college basketball history, announced his retirement as head coach of the Syracuse Orange on Wednesday. For the first time in nearly 50 years, Syracuse will be led by someone else. Looking back at Boeheim's Hall of Fame career, the accolades speak for themselves.
Over 1,100 wins (second in NCAA history), winning more than 71% of his games, 35 NCAA Tournament appearances, five Final Fours, two time gold medal winning assistant coach of USA Basketball and a National Champion. He turned Syracuse basketball into a powerhouse and a nationally relevant brand across five decades. The greatest zone coach in basketball history.
Simply put, Jim Boeheim was Syracuse basketball. The incredible memories also speak for themselves. The Big East Tournament run in 2006. The Final Four run as a double digit seed. The six overtime game. The countless Big East battles with Georgetown, Villanova, UConn and the like. The incredible players that came through the program over 50 years. The 30,000+ crowds that piled into the Dome to watch the Orange.
Syracuse basketball was a spectacle to behold and Jim Boeheim made it that. He spent more than 60 years at the university. He has spent more than three quarters of his life affiliated with the basketball program. For many, including myself, he is the only head coach Syracuse basketball has had during their lifetime.
An amazing career. A lasting legacy. One that will be remembered as one of the best to ever do it.
