Syracuse Hangs on for Road Win at NC State
Syracuse basketball won its seventh straight over NC State with a 87-83 road victory Tuesday night. With the in, the Orange improved to 17-10 (8-8) on the season. Next up is a JMA Wireless Dome matchup with Notre Dame on Saturday.
Syracuse controlled the first half behind hot shooting from Chris Bell. Bell carried the offense with 24 first half points on 8-9 shooting from three point range while Judah Mintz was scoreless dealing with foul trouble. After scoring 60 points the entire game against Georgia Tech on Saturday, the Orange poured in 55 in the first half against the Wolfpack to take a 15 point lead into the locker room.
NC State would not go away though, chipping away at the Orange lead until taking it back with four minutes to go on a pair of Ben Middlebrooks free throws. Judah Mintz would answer right back with a layup to put Syracuse back in front. After Middlebrooks went 1-2 from the line to tie it up, Syracuse got a pair of defensive stops.
Syracuse isolated Quadir Copeland, who drove and drew one of the few fouls called against NC State. With just 15 seconds remaining, Copeland buried both to give the Orange a two point lead.
The Wolfpack would turn to DJ Horne, who had a game high 32 points, to try to tie it. Copeland played strong defense to force an off balance jumper that fell short. Mintz would hit a pair of free throws to put the game away.
Bell finished the game with 26 points to lead Syracuse. Copeland added a career high 25 points to go with seven rebounds and two blocks. Judah Mintz scored all 15 of points in the second half.
The rebounding battle was nearly even, with NC State holding a narrow 32-30 advantage. Both teams scored 34 points in the paint. Syracuse shot 51% from the floor overall and 60% from three point range. NC State shot 46% and 41% respectively.
