Syracuse Basketball Upsets #7 North Carolina to Give Adrian Autry Signature Win
Syracuse basketball played its best game of the season and upset #7/#5 North Carolina 86-79 inside the JMA Wireless Dome Tuesday night. It was Syracuse's first win over a top 10 opponent since January of 2019 (#1 Duke). With the win, the Orange improved to 16-9 (7-7) on the season. Next up is a road game at Georgia Tech on Saturday. That game tips at 5:30 p.m. Eastern and will be broadcast on the CW Network.
It was quite a turnaround from the loss at North Carolina earlier this season when the Orange fell by 36 in a game that was not competitive from the start. This one was much different right from the start.
Judah Mintz led Syracuse with one of his most controlled, efficient games of his Orange career with 25 points on 8-11 shooting along with five rebounds, four assists and three steals. He was also 9-11 from the free throw line.
Three other Syracuse players scored in double figures. JJ Starling scored 23 points on 9-15 shooting including 3-6 from three point range. Maliq Brown added 14 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block. Chris Bell added 13 points and three rebounds.
Syracuse shot 62.5% from the floor overall and 47% from three point range in its most efficient offensive performance of the season. The hot shooting started early as the Orange jumped out to a 10 point lead midway through the first half. The Tar Heels would not go away, using an 11-2 run to retake the lead shortly before halftime. Syracuse answered by tying it up entering halftime.
The second half was almost a mirror image of the first as Syracuse jumped out to an eight point lead before North Carolina rallied back with the Orange responding from there. Syracuse would make key defensive plays down the stretch and make enough free throws to secure the victory.
