What to Know About Brenden Straughn
With the promotion of Adrian Autry to head coach of Syracuse basketball and the retirement of Jim Boeheim, a spot on the Orange's staff opened as a result. According to multiple reports, Syracuse is zeroing in on George Washington assistant Brenden Straughn to fill its vacancy. What would Straughn bring to the table if SU does indeed hire him? Here are some things to know.
COACHING EXPERIENCE
Straughn spent last season as an assistant at George Washington. Prior to that, he was an assistant at St. Joseph's from 2019 to 2022. During his time at St. Joe's, Straughn was responsible for developing the team's offensive concepts.
Before his time with the Hawks, Straughn was an assistant at Loyola-Maryland for the 2018-19 campaign. That came on the heels of being an assistant coach on the AAU level from 2013-2018, one of the top AAU programs on the circuit.
From 2013-2016, he had a very successful high school coaching career where he helped Eleanor Roosevelt High School to a 123-25 record as an assistant.
Straughn is a highly respected coach and developer of talent.
RECRUITING TIES
Head coach Adrian Autry has been Syracuse's primary recruiter in the DMV (Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia) area since he arrived. The addition of Straughn brings more ties to that area and could lead to the Orange bringing in more top talent from the region.
Straughn has extensive recruiting ties in the DMV. He has established strong relationships with key coaches that will help him recruit for Syracuse should the Orange officially hire him. Straughn coached over 70 division one players on the AAU circuit, including five McDonald's All Americans.
In fact, while at St. Joseph's, he was the program's recruiting coordinator.
OVERALL
If Straughn is in fact the guy, this would check all of the boxes many Syracuse fans wanted. He is not a former player and therefore shows evidence of looking for the best possible fit. He comes with extensive recruiting ties and is a respected coach. This would be a strong hire for the Orange.
