Matthew Bergeron Selected by Atlanta Falcons in NFL Draft
Syracuse offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron was selected in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons with the 38th overall pick. He becomes the highest picked Orange player since Justin Pugh was taken by the New York Giants in the 2013 draft.
Bergeron's journey to Syracuse is an interesting one. He arrived at a summer recruiting camp as part of a Canadian contingent hoping to catch division one coaches' eyes. Bergeron was not even known by the Orange coaches, but immediately impressed just a couple of reps into one on one drills. The Syracuse coaches offered immediately after the camp and secured his commitment shortly thereafter. He signed with the Orange's 2019 class.
The 6-5, 322 pounder was a four year contributor and full-time starter for the last three seasons. Bergeron was an All ACC performer the last two years.
“It has been an incredible honor to be a student-athlete at Syracuse University,” Bergeron said in his Twitter post when he declared for the NFL Draft. “The relationships that I have built and the experiences that I have had have been priceless. Lifelong friendships with my teammates that I am so thankful for.
“Thank you to all my coaches during my time here, but a special thanks to Coach Babers and Coach Schmidt. Your constant support has helped me grow more than I could have ever thought possible. I am humbled by the opportunity in front of me and I could not have gotten here without the unwavering support and love from my family.
“I will forever cherish my time at Syracuse University. It has always been a dream of mine to play in the NFL and I know that because of my time here I am well prepared for the next challenge.”
