WHAT WE KNOW

Caleb Okechukwu is one of the leaders of the entire defense. Okechukwu was one of the best defensive linemen in the ACC last season with seven sacks, two forced fumbles and a memorable pick six. The 6-4, 270 pounder is a big, physical athlete with a variety of pass rush moves at his disposal while also being solid against the run. On top of his physical traits, he is also one of the veteran leaders of the defense. Younger players look to him for guidance and he is very well respected in the locker room.

WHAT WE DON'T

Who will replace Jatius Geer? Geer transferred to South Carolina and the Orange is down one of its expected starting defensive ends. Geer started last season and recorded 3.5 sacks as a redshirt freshman. He flashed big time ability and was expected to have an even bigger year in 2023. It is definitely a big loss. So who fills that role as the starting defensive end opposite Okechukwu? Denis Jaquez and Kevin Jobity are the most likely candidates. Jaquez played in the first five games last season before suffering an injury while Jobity appeared in the final eight. Both were true freshmen who should expect to be better in year two.

BIGGEST CONCERN

Lack of experience. The loss of Geer not only takes talent away from the Orange, but also one of its most experienced defensive ends. With 12 starts under his belt, Geer was expected to take the next step in 2023 while young players provided depth behind him. Now, other than Okechukwu, Kevin Jobity's eight games as a reserve last season are the most playing experience at defensive end. Chase Simmons redshirted in 2021, appeared in three games last year before getting hurt. Denis Jaques appeared in five before getting hurt. Francois Nolton redshirted. Jalil Smith, David Omopariola and Ty Gordon are all incoming true freshmen.

BIGGEST STRENGTH

The biggest concern could also the biggest strength. There are several young players that give the Orange talent to work with even if they are currently unproven. Players like Denis Jaquez, who earned playing time as a true freshman before getting hurt. Kevin Jobity played in each of the final eight games last season as a true freshman, recording two sacks. Francois Nolton was a highly touted recruit who had a strong 2022 spring game before redshirting last season. Chase Simmons is an athletic freak who could emerge. If even two of the really young players are ready for prominent roles, the defense end rotation becomes deep.
