Syracuse Wins at Purdue to Improve to 3-0
Syracuse turned to a 4-4 trick to win 35-20 at Purdue and improve to 3-0 on the season. Quarterback Garrett Shrader ran for four touchdowns and the Orange defense forced four turnovers to pace the impressive road victory. Next up for SU is a home game against Army to wrap up non-conference play. That game kicks off at noon on Saturday, September 23rd.
This is the first time Syracuse has started back to back seasons 3-0 since 1959 and 1960.
Shrader was the best player on the field all night and Purdue's defense had no answer for his legs. Shrader ran for 195 yards on 25 carries and four touchdowns as he shredded the Boilermakers. Shrader was mostly accurate with his arm as well, but several drops by Orange receivers took points off the board. Despite that, the Shrader led offense put over 35 on the road against a Big Ten opponent. He was 14-28 for 184 yards and an interception on the night throwing the ball.
The Orange relied on its ground attack in this one, rushing for 271 yards on 6.2 yards per attempt. LeQuint Allen ran for 80 yards and a touchdown while making six receptions for 62 yards.
The defense set the tone on Purdue's first possession. The Boilermakers moved the ball inside the Syracuse five yard line, but the Orange got a turnover on fourth down to prevent points. The offense scored a touchdown on the next drive and SU controlled most of the action from that point.
Jeremiah Wilson, Marlowe Wax, Derek McDonald and Justin Barron led an impressive defensive effort. The four combined for 32 tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack, three forced fumbles, one interception and three passes defensed. In total, Syracuse forced seven fumbles while recovering three and held Purdue to 80 yards rushing on just 2.5 yards per carry.
