Series History: Syracuse and James Madison have met only one time previous to this matchup. That was in 2010 with the Orange prevailing 7-3. That was also in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Syracuse Coming In: Syracuse came into the NCAA Tournament having lost two of three after starting the season 15-0 and being ranked at the top of the polls. The Orange had clearly looked like the best team all season until a sloppy second half against Boston College in the regular season finale seemed to zap some of that momentum. It carried into the ACC Tournament where Syracuse struggled against Virginia Tech before getting blown out by North Carolina. Still, Syracuse earned the two seed in the NCAA Tournament and boasts one of the top offensive attacks along with goalkeeping in the country. Syracuse looked much more like itself in a dominant 25-8 victory over Johns Hopkins in its first NCAA Tournament game. Now Syracuse is hoping to get back to the Final Four and closer to its first ever National Championship.
James Madison Coming In: The Dukes, National Champions in 2018, has had a very strong season. JMU is 19-2, with its only losses at North Carolina and in the conference tournament to Florida. Following two straight close NCAA Tournament wins, the Dukes are hoping to advance to the Final Four for the first time since the title year in 2018. JMU is deadly on the free position and has strong goalkeeping.
