Syracuse kept their record perfect in the JMA Wireless Dome Tuesday evening, defeating in-state foe Cornell 19-13. The Orange are now 12-0, a feat previously unaccomplished until this year.

Leading the way for the Orange were none other than the Tyrrell sisters. Meaghan led the team in scoring with five goals on the day, but Emma wasn’t far behind; the senior midfielder had four goals, including a hat trick by halftime. This was Emma Tyrrell’s third straight game with four goals.

After the game, Head Coach Kayla Treanor said she thinks that their matchup against Duke was what triggered Emma Tyrrell’s offensive explosion.

“Ever since, I think, the Duke game, she’s really taken it to another level,” Treanor said. “For her, she’s just getting a little better every game. When she’s shooting well, she’s pretty unstoppable.”

Two of Emma Tyrrell’s goals were scored off an assist from her sister. Meaghan Tyrrell expressed her pride in her sister’s performance after the game.

“It’s awesome. The chemistry we’ve had for so long now is just really kind of shining through,” Tyrrell said. “She’s doing so great this season, especially coming off of injury. I couldn’t be more proud of her.”

Syracuse saw 10 of their players score, a testament to the team’s depth. Among those 10 was an unusual scorer: Katie Goodale. She scored her first goal of the season.

Why is that unusual? Well, Goodale plays defense.

Late in the first period, Emma Ward found Goodale with a pass. Goodale then raced towards the goal, firing a rocket into the bottom of the goal.

The entire Syracuse roster and coaching staff jumped up and down in excitement, with Coach Treanor looking on, a massive smile plastered on her face. After the game, her teammates recounted the moment when one of the team’s best defenders finally got to experience the feeling of scoring, with Meaghan Tyrrell beaming when asked about Goodale’s score.

“Katie felt that confidence and she kept going up the field. It’s just such a huge momentum shift for us,” Meaghan Tyrrell said. “That was just such a cool moment for her, and for us.”

Delaney Sweitzer agreed with her teammate, adding that even defenders should be feared by opposing defenses.

“Everyone on our team’s a threat,” Sweitzer added. “Watch out… KG’s gonna score another!”

The two then exited the press conference laughing as their coach watched on with a smile.

Speaking of Delaney Sweitzer, the reigning ACC Defensive Player of the Week had an outstanding game. She tallied an astounding 13 saves, allowing just six goals for a 68.4% save percentage. This week marked the third consecutive week Sweitzer has won the conference’s weekly award and the fourth instance this season.

She said a big part of her recent success has to do with her mindset.

“We’ve been talking about mindset. That’s something that I’ve really been working on,” Sweitzer said. “Staying neutral and being ready. I felt very prepared coming into this game and just knowing that the defense in front of me is going to do whatever they can to stop the ball.”

For the Big Red, shots didn’t find the twine until Sweitzer was on the sidelines. The score heading into the fourth period was 17-6 in favor of the Orange, prompting Coach Treanor to give most of her starters some well-deserved rest.

Kimber Hower took over for Sweitzer in net and the Big Red took advantage of the change. Cornell scored seven unanswered goals to pull within four, with Hower allowing all seven. It wasn’t Hower’s best showing, but Coach Treanor has stated repeatedly that she takes advantage of opportunities to play as many members of her squad as possible, thus explaining the decision to leave Hower in net.

Because of that late-game surge, three Cornell players were able to get themselves a hat trick. Josie Vogel and Katie Castiello both scored three goals for the Big Red, while Shannon Brazier led the team with four. Besides those three, no other player scored more than once.

In net, Cornell tried out two goalies. Ellie Horner started the game, but was replaced by Mackenzie Clark at the start of the second period. However, Horner returned to the game halfway through the third period.

In total, Horner recorded five saves, but allowed 12 goals. Clark wasn’t particularly successful, either; she picked up two saves and allowed seven goals.

Syracuse improves to 12-0 with the win. Cornell, on the other hand, will fall to 6-5. The Orange are back in action this Saturday at the JMA Wireless Dome. They will take on #11 Virginia at 6 p.m. in their second to last home game of the season. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
