Joey Spallina's Career High Seven Assists, 10 Points Leads Syracuse to Victory Over Manhattan
The Syracuse men's lacrosse team picked up their third win of the season by defeating Manhattan 16-3 Friday night in the JMA Wireless Dome. While this was the Orange's third game, it was the season opener for the Jaspers.
Joey Spallina had 10 points on three goals and seven assists to keep up his hot start to the season. The 10 points and seven assists were both career highs. The last player to achieve 10 points in a game at Syracuse was Ryan Powell in March of 2000.
11 different players scored for the Orange and three different goalies saw time in the cage.
Owen Hiltz played another outstanding game as he finished with six points (3g, 3a). He has had 12 points in the last two games. Jake Stevens also netted two.
Christian Mule, Michael Leo, Sam English, Luke Rhoa, Tyler Cordes, Greg Elijah- Brown, Saam Olexo, and Mason Kohn all contributed one goal. Brown got his first Syracuse goal with 4:55 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Will Mark started in the cage playing for a total of 40 minutes and recording six saves. Sophomore Jimmy McCool went in for Mark and had four saves. Redshirt junior Patrick Duffy played for the last two minutes and had one save.
Head coach Gary Gait said it was great to get deep within the bench tonight.
“It’s always nice to reward guys with playing time who deserve it,” said Gait.
Aside from a great night of Syracuse lacrosse, Mariano Rivera, former MLB pitcher, made an appearance in the JMA Wireless Dome as his son is in the faceoff rotation for the Jaspers.
The Orange have a bit of a break after playing three games in the span of six days. Syracuse takes on fifth ranked Maryland at 6 p.m. in the Dome next Saturday (February 17th).
