Continuing their sensational season, #1 Syracuse handled yet another ranked opponent swiftly. The Orange cruised past the #19 Clemson Tigers 19-10 Saturday afternoon at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.

Clemson, in their first ever season, has risen through the ranks of college lacrosse instantly, despite Head Coach Allison Kwolek battling cancer for the majority of the season. Syracuse Head Coach Kayla Treanor praised the Tigers’ ability to be so resilient.

“I’m really in awe of that coach, Allison, and just what she's done with the program,” Treanor said. “The fight she’s going through right now… she’s an inspiration to the lacrosse community. Her team is a reflection of her.”

For Treanor’s squad, it was yet another incredible offensive showing, led by Olivia Adamson. The sophomore attack had a career high in points with seven, coming from three goals and four assists.

Adamson has also taken over draws in Kate Mashewske’s absence. Mashewske suffered a season-ending lower body injury against Notre Dame several weeks ago. If there was any doubt Adamson could fill her shoes, it was eliminated Saturday afternoon; she tallied 14 draw controls, another career high.

“I think we did a really good job of executing our game play, and I just got to be on the scoring end of that,” Adamson said of her performance. “All the credit to my teammates.”

While discussing her draw controls, Adamson revealed that Mashewske has been helping her teammates, acting as a coach of sorts.

“All the credit to our circle people and our coaches. Having Kate be able to coach me up during the week is awesome,” Adamson said. “I was just seeing the ball really well and my teammates were doing a great job boxing. Being able to get 14 draw controls… that’s great circle play! That’s awesome!”

Delaney Sweitzer continued to show her dominance in the crease, picking up eight first-half saves and 13 total. She was recently named a First Team Midseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse, joined by Meaghan Tyrrell on the First Team squad. In all, Syracuse had seven players on the various Midseason All-American lists.

Sweitzer gave immense credit to the defense in front of her, which includes Katie Goodale. She was named to the Second Team Midseason All-American team.

“Like I say all the time, I know my defense is going to work to stop the ball before it ever gets to me,” Sweitzer said. “We had some struggles in the first half and we were playing a lot of defense, but I was just able to come up, see the ball well and be ready.”

Behind Adamson and Sweitzer, Meaghan Tyrrell and Emma Ward were terrific, as well, recording four and five goals, respectively. Notably, Tyrrell is now just five points shy of the second place spot on Syracuse’s all-time career points list.

Who would she overtake, should she break the record? None other than her coach, Kayla Treanor. Ahead of Treanor is Syracuse legend and Albany Head Coach Katie Rowan; Tyrrell is now eight points shy of Rowan’s record. It is very likely that Tyrrell will, at the end of this season, be Syracuse’s all-time points leader.

It’s unlikely that she, or maybe anyone, will break Kayla Treanor’s single-season goal record; Treanor scored 79 goals in 2014, a record few have ever come close to breaking.

Ward’s accuracy was fantastic on Saturday. Out of the five shots she took, all five were on goal and all five ended up in the net. She also assisted a goal and turned the ball over just once, despite her massively important role as a passer.

For Clemson, it was more individual performances that kept them in the game. Gianna New, Miya Scanlan, Chloe Willard and Hanna Hilcoff all scored two goals, with New leading the Tigers offense with four total points. Behind her was Jalyn Jimerson with three points, coming from a goal and two assists.

Syracuse’s offensive firepower was just simply too much for the Tigers defense to handle, especially for goalkeeper Emily Lamparter. She made nine saves, but allowed a whopping 19 goals.

The Orange are now 14-0 on the season, 7-0 in ACC play and 8-0 over ranked opponents. Their next matchup is one of the most anticipated across the lacrosse world; they’ll face defending champions UNC in Chapel Hill on April 15. The game will begin at noon and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
