Auburn transfer guard Chance Westry has committed to Syracuse basketball. The news was first reported by Jonathan Givony from ESPN. Westry is the second high profile transfer to pick the Orange, joining Notre Dame transfer JJ Starling. In 11 games at Auburn last season, Westry averaged 2.5 points, 1.0 assists and 0.7 steals in just over nine minutes per game. Westry ultimately took a medical redshirt after dealing with injury issues. He also had transfer offers from Creighton, Seton Hall, St. John's and Penn State.

"Great coaching, great program," Westry said. "Obviously it was my first offer (out of high school). Just Syracuse helping me develop into a better player on the court and off the court."

Syracuse recruited Westry out of high school, where he was near consensus top 40 prospect (247Sports ranked him at 44, while ESPN, Rivals and On3 had him between 34 and 37). That previous relationship, led by Associate Head Coach Gerry McNamara, played a pivotal role in Westry's transfer recruitment.

"He was always real and always transparent," Westry said. "I appreciated that because the bond only got stronger from both parties keeping it real with each other."

Part of Syracuse's pitch, including during an in-home visit with the staff, was that Westry has the ability to have a prominent role on the team regardless of whether or not Judah Mintz returns.

"My role is just coming into the team and contribute," Westry said. "Just playing really well as a combo guard, which I am because I can play the point or play without (the ball) and make it position-less."

The 6-6 Westry also believes his game can compliment both Starling and Mintz.

"We're all unselfish, that plays a big part of it," Westry said. "Judah being unselfish, JJ being able to shoot the ball and me being able to distribute and score as well."

Westry's message to Syracuse fans is simple, but effective.

"Let's get the Dome rocking," Westry said. "Let's turn up. It's about that time."

Mike's career started with his own free blog as a way to vent following sporting events. Shortly thereafter, a network of basketball sites called Coast 2 Coast Hoops asked him to run their Syracuse site.
