Syracuse basketball picked up a commitment from Auburn transfer guard Chance Westry on Monday. What does this move mean for the Orange?

THE PLAYER

Chance Westry is a long guard at 6-6 who can play as the lead guard or off the ball. His skill set is versatile enough to play on the wing as a small forward as well. Westry is great off the dribble, a willing passer to set up teammates for easy opportunities and is a natural scorer. He was a highly coveted recruit for a reason. Westry combines that length with supreme athleticism, excellent body control and quick feet. Developing a consistent three point shot along with continuing to get stronger are the areas of improvement that could take his game to the next level. Given his form on his jumper and willingness to work behind the scenes, those should come.

THE ROSTER

The previously mentioned versatility is extremely helpful to Syracuse. In the event that Judah Mintz returns, Westry can play alongside him and JJ Starling as a third guard/small forward. Whether that is in the starting lineup or off the bench. In addition, he can backup both guard spots to provide more options in the rotation. If Mintz stays in the NBA Draft, Westry would figure to slot in as the other starting guard with Starling. Either way, he is a big addition that will play a prominent role next season.

NIL

Westry has said NIL was not a factor in his ultimate decision, but the ability to add a player of his caliber (he is considered a top 50 player in the portal per 247Sports and a four star transfer prospect) should dispel the notion that Syracuse will be unable to recruit top tier talent without Adam Weitsman in the wake of Jesse Edwards' recent comments. Landing two of the top transfers shows the Orange staff can still attract elite talent and that should provide hope for fans moving forward.
