Michael Matthews-Canty Commits to Syracuse Football
Class of 2024 Fredericksburg (VA) St. Michael defensive back Michael Matthews-Canty has committed to Syracuse, he announced on social media. The 6-2 200 pounder will play safety for the Orange and chose SU over offers from Appalachian State, James Madison, Liberty and Temple. He officially visited Syracuse the weekend of June 9th, and becomes the 14th member of the Orange's 2024 recruiting class.
Matthews-Canty is a versatile athlete who plays wide receiver, linebacker, safety and even a little corner at the high school level. While teams were recruiting him for various positions, he is expected to play safety for Syracuse. He is known for his physicality and will bring that to the Orange secondary.
This is the first player from Virginia to commit to Syracuse during the 2024 recruiting cycle. The Orange has hit the state in past cycles as well, landing two players in 2023 (Ike Daniels, Ty Gordon), one in 2021 (Umari Hatcher) and two more in 2020 (Anwar Sparrow, Ja'Had Carter).
In addition to being the first player from Virginia, Matthews-Canty is also the first safety in Syracuse's 2024 recruiting class. He likely fits in at the Rover position, which has both defensive back and linebacker principles. His skill set and experience playing both in high school should translate well to that position within the 3-3-5 scheme.
