Michael Matthews-Canty Recaps Syracuse Visit, Sets Commitment Date
Class of 2024 Fredericksburg (VA) St. Michael athlete Michael Matthews-Canty was on the Syracuse campus over the weekend for an official visit.
"The visit was good," Matthews-Canty said. "I really liked everything about it. The coaching staff was great to me. They welcomed me with open arms. It was good."
Matthews-Canty plays linebacker, safety and wide receiver at the high school level. Syracuse, however, is recruiting him at the rover position in its 3-3-5 scheme.
"I got to sit down with coach Perkins and we got to talk a lot of ball," Matthews-Canty said. "He said if I come in I'd play at the rover spot. I really like that position because that position really plays everywhere on the field. You can be a linebacker off the edge and play safety. I feel like it could be a good fit for me."
The player host for the 6-2, 200 pounder was current Syracuse safety Bralyn Oliver.
"Really cool dude, fun to be around," Matthews-Canty said. "He told me about the defensive scheme and this is where you want to be if you want to get to the next level."
After the visit, Matthews-Canty says Syracuse is one of his top schools. So what is next in his recruiting process? He says he is in decision making mode with a planned announcement on June 26th.
In addition to the Orange, Matthews-Canty also holds offers from Appalachian State, James Madison, Liberty and Temple among others. Virginia Tech is also expressing interest.
