Mikey Lewis on Syracuse Offer: 'I Had a Big Smile'
Syracuse basketball extended an offer to 2024 point guard Mikey Lewis on Monday, who says it was assistant Brenden Straught that extended the scholarship opportunity.
"I played pretty good this past weekend at the EYBL," Lewis said. "My program directors put me on the phone with coach Straughn and he was just saying that he really liked my game. That he could see me coming up there and he offered me."
The offer left Lewis smiling.
"I was in the gym and getting up shots," Lewis said. "When he told me, I was just really excited. Really happy. I had a big smile. I was really excited."
Despite being on the west coast, Lewis says he is familiar with the Syracuse program.
"Me and coach Straughn have quite a few people in common," Lewis said. "They all said good things and spoke very highly of him. Syracuse, I watched a lot of their games. Especially when they're on ESPN, I watch a lot of those games, ABC and national networks. I watch a lot of college basketball so I've tuned in to quite a few of their games."
The next step is for Lewis to continue to develop his relationship with the Orange coaching staff and to get on campus. He says he plans to schedule visits in the near future, and Syracuse is a school he wants to see.
"Yes I definitely want to," Lewis said. "They were saying they definitely want to get me on campus at some point, and I plan on setting dates to go on visits here within the next two weeks."
When he visits Syracuse, likely for an official, he knows exactly what to look for in order to determine if the Orange is the right fit.
"I definitely want to talk about the play style and how they see me playing," Lewis said. "The development. I want to be the best player I possibly can and put myself in the best position to possibly make it to the league (NBA) one day. So those things are definitely going to factor in to helping me make my decision."
Syracuse is not the only school that has offered Lewis. He has been a hot prospect on the recruiting trail, with offers from Washington State, Arizona State, Providence and Illinois in addition to the Orange.
"It feels really good," Lewis said. "It's a blessing. I work pretty hard so I just feel like I was happy to see it. I know there's a lot more to it, not just in the long run but even with the EYBL. It's a long season. There's a lot more left in my career, so I'm just trying to keep working."
