Zekai Wimberly Impressed With Syracuse's Culture
Class of 2024 West Orange (NJ) High linebacker Zekai Wimberly was offered by Syracuse last summer. The Orange has stayed in contact since, and he took a visit this past weekend.
"Cuse was great," Wimberly said. "Really had a great time up there with my family. Coach Nunz, coach Babers, coach Brewer and the rest of the coaches. Thankful for the hospitality. Also thankful for coach Maddox giving me knowledge about the Newhouse for public communication and broadcasting which is one of the things I want to major in. Just to sum it up, this was a great weekend and can’t wait to come back up here and keep building a relationship with the staff.
"On Friday I got to hear coach Babers speak to the recruits and parents. Just got hear them pick his brain, and everything he said sounded very sincere and genuine. Then I got to take a photo shoot. That was really cool. Then just chopping it up with the coaches about the school. Got to talk to some of the players a little bit. Saturday I got to see them practice, then scrimmage, and those boys was on one yesterday, I just love their competitive energy throughout the whole practice. Then I was taken on a tour around the campus. I would say that was my favorite part. Just coach brewer showing/telling us the rich history about the school and how they try to keep the outside of the school to look the same."
The 6-2, 240 pounder liked what he saw during the practice.
"I noticed that everyone was non-stop competitive," Wimberly said. "Made me want to put the pads on. The coaches made sure everything was precise and done the right way or they would do it over. Most of all they had fun doing it and I feel that having fun is the key component of playing football. Of course it’s a business and a job but you gotta love doing it."
The facilities were also a highlight of the trip.
"I love the athletic dorms on the campus," Wimberly said. "Also how you have four people in one apartment. It causes you to have to bond with your teammates and build a relationship with them."
Overall, the visit left an impression on Wimberly, who took away that Syracuse's culture is a strong one.
"The visit made me really love the environment, the coaches and attitude of the college," Wimberly said.
