SYRACUSE, N.Y. The Syracuse Orange men's soccer team defeated Providence 2-0 Thursday night at SU Soccer Stadium. The Cuse dominated this game from kickoff until the final whistle, outshooting Providence 13-4, and 8-2 in the on-goal category. On a night where Syracuse fans got to see a conference as well as a national championship banner raised, the Orange gave them even more to cheer about.

Head Coach Ian McIntyre credited the Orange’s hustle with much of their success in shutting down the Friar’s offense

“The front guys worked hard” McIntyre said, “The work ethic of Lorenzo and Nick… Suski coming in, Felipe.”

On the offensive side of things, Lorenzo Boselli was the catalyst, scoring both Syracuse goals, which both came inside the first 13 minutes of play. He spoke to the importance of starting the new season off strong after the raising of last years banners.

“This year’s a new year and after 20 minutes we were up 2-0 so it was a great start,” Boselli said.

The Friar’s did show some life later in the contest, nearly cutting the Cuse lead in half only one minute into the second half as Jason Smith made a diving save to rob Providence forward Brendan McSorley of a goal.

This was the Friar’s first shot on goal all night, and although they would tally three more, it would not prove to be enough.

Three Takeaways

1. It looks as if Nicholas Kaloukian may score a lot of goals. Kaloukian had a few golden opportunities tonight, taking four shots, and although he was unable to find nylon, it’s only a matter of time before he starts making opponents pay.

2. Syracuse probably should have scored more than two goals. This game was not as close as it looked. Syracuse easily could have tallied a third goal, with many of their shots coming on goal and oftentimes with some speed. These were not stat-sheet fillers, these were quality scoring opportunities.

3. Lorenzo Boselli has some hops. Boselli joked after the game that he never thought he would score on two headers in a single game. Boselli stands at 5’11”, but that didn’t seem to matter today, as he and his team soared above the competition.
