Syracuse Softball Week Three Recap
Syracuse softball was off to a hot streak after leaving Southeastern Louisiana last week with three wins, two of them being against power five competition. However, this weekend at the Best on the Bayou Classic, Syracuse ran into a little trouble.
Let’s be clear on one thing first, this team has the right pieces to the puzzle, it is just about finding the right matches to put together.
When it comes to hitting that has not been a problem for this Syracuse lineup who averaged 5.6 runs a game this past weekend just shy under their average of 5.9 runs per game on the season.
The pitching staff is the biggest area that needs careful craftmanship on how to use all five arms in effective situations. Despite the high-scoring games Syracuse has pitched in, they have two pitchers with sub-two ears. One of them being senior Lindsey Hendrix who has a perfect record of 5-0 in 32.1 innings pitched. The amount of growth from the veteran in the circle cannot go unnoticed as last season she finished with 9 wins and a 4.30 ERA and if she continues the path, she is on now she will set numerous career highs for herself in her last campaign in Orange.
Another senior who is making a splash early in her last run is Angel Jasso who can’t be beaten at the plate. The outfielder who was the only player to start every game last season is slugging a career-high .489 batting average. That is almost two hundred points higher than last season. Earlier this month Jasso talked about the motivation she had coming into season.
“The preseason rankings came out for the ACC, and they put us at 12 and that just lit a fire under us because everyone has always underestimated us and we’ll prove how we should be right at the top with the rest of them,” said Jasso.
After going 8 and 6 in preconference tournaments, Syracuse will now enter the heart of their schedule. They will head into conference play on the road against Duke who is currently ranked #6 in the country and holds a 12-1 record with their only loss being reigning back-to-back to back National Champions the Oklahoma Sooners.
A challenge of a matchup to open ACC play but one that Syracuse should go in playing fearlessly because they have nothing to lose and EVERYTHING to gain.
