Aggie Baseball Projected To Play In Stanford Regional In NCAA Tournament

The Aggies could miss out on facing Stanford and several other programs with a souring finish to the regular season.

Texas A&M Aggies baseball made headlines in Year 1 under Jim Schlossnagle after its impressive run to the College World Series semifinals in Omaha. Now, the program could miss out on the postseason altogether.

In the current field of 64 projections by D1Baseball, the Aggies are listed as the No. 3-seed in the Staford Regional. Currently, D1Baseball has A&M taking on No. 2-seed UC Santa Barbara, with the winner advancing to take on either top-seed Stanford or No.4-seed San Diego State.

Seeding is based on several ramifications, including non-conference victories -- or RPI -- to outweigh the limited progress of conference matchups. Per D1Basebal, the Aggies should meet the criteria for their non-conference schedule, but a souring finish against SEC opponents could decide the fate of the program looking to keep pace after a 40-win season.

Inconsistent pitching deteriorated A&M's production in 2022. Nathan Dettmer (1-3, 6.08 ERA) has been a constant as the Friday starter, but rotational switches have hampered the Aggies' production. Schlossnagle has used nine different weekend rotations to try and get A&M back on course since the start of the regular season.

The Aggies hope that better days are ahead following their 6-5 win over Tarleton State. A&M will return to Olsen Field Friday for a three-game series against third-ranked Florida. The Aggies have not won a conference series since facing then-No. 13 Kentucky in Lexington on Apr. 23.

Offensively, the Aggies will have to rely on hot hitters Hunter Haas and Jordan Thompson. Against the Cowboys, Hass smacked a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to give A&M a 6-4 lead. Thompson finished 2-of-2 with an RBI single and drew a pair of walks.

In his last five games, Thompson is 7-of-16 with two home runs and seven RBIs. Haas, a transfer from Arizona State, is 3-of-18 at the plate over his previous five games with pair of homers and five RBIs.

In D1Baseball's latest projections, 11 programs from the SEC were represented as part of the Round of 64. Auburn, Alabama, and A&M were listed as "bubble teams" as the third seed in their respective divisions, while Georgia was named the "last team in."

Last season, Ole Miss took home its first national title after sneaking into the NCAA Tournament as a "last team in." The Rebels coasted through the Regional and Super Regional rounds to defeat Oklahoma in the College World Series final.

The Aggies have three more SEC series against Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi State before the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Ala., starting on May 23. A&M will play its final midweek game of the season against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley next Tuesday.
