Aggies To Face Tennessee In First Round Of SEC Baseball Tournament
Texas A&M baseball will have a long route to the conference’s title game this week, but at least it knows its path toward the finish line.
The Aggies grabbed the No. 10 seed in the SEC Tournament, which begins Tuesday in Hoover, Ala. at the Hoover Met. The conference tournament will last six days before seeding for the national tournament beginning next month.
In Round 1 of the single-elimination matchup, A&M will face No. 7-seed Tennessee. Should the Aggies prevail, they’ll advance to a double-elimination match against No. 2-seed Arkansas.
Florida, Arkansas, LSU, and Vanderbilt all garnered first-round byes after finishing at the top of the standings. Currently, the Gators are the betting favorites to win the conference championship.
The Aggies (32-23, 14-16 SEC) struggled down the stretch, losing two of their four final series in conference play. A&M prevailed in Starkville over the weekend against Mississippi State, winning back-to-back games thanks to the long ball.
Tennessee and Arkansas both provided challenges for the Aggies on the road this season. The Volunteers swept the Aggies, outscoring them 27-17, while Razorbacks won by a margin of +2 runs.
Tennessee (38-18, 16-14 SEC) won its final two SEC series over Kentucky and South Carolina. The Volunteers likely turn to right-hander Chase Dollander (6-6, 4.28 ERA) Tuesday in a winner-take-all showdown.
Dollander, who features a four-pitch combination of a fastball, curveball, changeup and slider, is projected to be a top 10 selection in next month’s MLB draft. He is listed as the No. 2 college pitcher behind LSU’s Paul Skense.
The Razorbacks (39-15, 20-10 SEC) dropped their season finale series at Vanderbilt. Arkansas, which finished with one of the top offenses in college baseball, claimed a share of the regular-season SEC West division title along with LSU.
First pitch Tuesday from the Hoover Met is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
