Aggies G Wade Taylor IV Named SEC Preseason Player of the Year
Texas A&M Aggies fans now have another reason to be excited for the college basketball season.
After an impressive sophomore season, Aggies guard Wade Taylor IV was named the preseason SEC Player of the Year by Jon Rothstein of College Hoops Today, joining a list of highly touted performers from last year.
Rothstein's list included Auburn big-man Johni Broome, Tennessee's Santiago Vescovi, Alabama's Mark Sears and Mississippi State standout Tolu Smith — all players who either finished in the top five of an SEC stat category or proved to be standouts behind departing veterans.
Taylor IV falls in the first category, as he finished fourth overall in points per game with 16.3. Topping that list was the NBA's No. 2 overall pick Brandon Miller, putting Taylor in strong company as a sophomore.
Last season, the Aggies' guard also tallied 3.9 assists and 1.7 steals to go along with his point totals, which was a big part of his success. Being versatile on defense allowed him to not only crack the rotation but become a leader by the end of the season.
Now that he's sitting atop the Aggies' roster and among the SEC's top talent, however, Taylor IV's game is likely to improve even more. Being named the Preseason Player of the Year is just the first step to that, as coach Buzz Williams' squad looks to return to the NCAA tournament and beyond.
