Texas A&M Aggies Men's Hoops Season Opener: Preview, How to Watch, Betting Odds

The Texas A&M Aggies will take to their home court for the first time of the season against the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions, looking to keep coach Buzz Williams' perfect season opener streak alive.
In this story:

After a long offseason, the Texas A&M Aggies will officially be back at Reed Arena for the first game of their 2023-24 campaign.

Expectations are high — the Aggies' performance a year ago made sure of that. Despite a disappointing early loss in the NCAA tournament, Texas A&M set records with 15 conference victories, which for everyone except the organizers of the "don't rank us" propaganda, is a good thing.

This season, the Aggies boast a much more difficult non-conference schedule, and looking at last year's schedule alone, that doesn't bode well. Non-conference losses were the downfall of Texas A&M a year ago, so finding ways to win early on will be crucial, and coach Buzz Williams made that clear.

"Texas A&M wasn’t very good in non-conference play,” Williams said of last year's squad. “If you look at any of the games at Myrtle Beach, we were awful. There was a lot of embarrassment at Christmas. … [but] I think the competitive spirit of our players [helped our improvement].”

Against Texas A&M Commerce, that competitive spirit will be on display for the first time this year. Buzz Williams is 4-0 in season openers since taking the helm of the Aggies in 2019, and between that and all of the Aggies' returning starters, they should be able to notch a win to open up their season.

In fact, anything less would be concerning.
