A&M's Spiller Named SEC Freshman of the Week
COLLEGE STATION - Texas A&M added another victory to their column with a 45-14 win over UTSA. While the defense and Kellen Mond played a role, another Aggie was the focal point during their way to the win column.
Isaiah Spiller had shown improvement over the past three games. The Klein Collins' product rushed for over 150 yards and two touchdowns during victories against schools from the Magnolia State. Saturday proved that the young running back is destined for greatness up at College Station for the remainder of his career.
Spiller was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week after the win this weekend. The league announced the news Monday morning. Spiller's success culminated with three touchdowns in the first and third quarter.
Spiller etched his name in the record books by matching the single-game rushing record for a true freshman with 217 yards on 20 carries. Additionally, he matched Leeland McElroy’s freshman record for rushing touchdowns in a game with three. The single-season record was held by former A&M running back Trayveon Williams, who was also in attendance.
The Spring, Texas native converted three runs for over 40 yards on the afternoon. In the first quarter, he'd rush for a 60-yard touchdown on the first play of the drive. On the opening drive of the third quarter, he'd find the end zone from 50 yards out. Spiller would also score on an 8-yard touchdown late in the third to give A&M a 42-7 lead.
This becomes the second weekly honor from the SEC has presented to the Aggies in 2019. Junior linebacker Buddy Johnson was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 21.
The Aggies will head into their bye week before returning to Kyle Field one final time this season to take on South Carolina on Saturday, Nov.16. The game will be televised on SEC Network.
