Watch: Aggies QB Conner Weigman Scores First Career Rushing TD vs. Miami
Last week, Texas A&M jumped out to a 14-0 lead over New Mexico en route to a dominant 52-10 win. Could Week 2 provide similar results?
The No. 23 Aggies struck first Saturday against Miami at Hard Rock Stadium on a one-yard quarterback keeper from sophomore Conner Weigman. The Aggies gunslinger has yet to throw an interception through seven games to begin his A&M career.
Special teams deserve praise for giving A&M (1-0) exceptional field position to begin its first drive. After forcing a three-and-out on the Hurricanes' offense, Dylan Joyce's punt was blocked by freshman receiver Jahdae Walker and recovered by Chris Russell Jr.
Weigman, who became the first A&M quarterback since Johnny Manziel in 2013 to throw for five touchdowns in regulation, began the drive at the Hurricanes' 15-yard line. Running back Amari Daniels picked up nine yards on a swing pass from Weigman before giving the offense a fresh set of downs at the goal line.
Last week, Weigman looked dialed in under first-year coordinator Bobby Petrino, going 18-of-23 for 236 yards. He found sophomore Noah Thomas for three touchdowns during the first half. Evan Stewart was on the receiving end of the other two scores.
Stewart, a former five-star from Frisco, led the Aggies with eight catches for 115 yards. Thomas, who won Offensive MVP of the spring practice, recorded a career-best six catches for 74 yards to match his hat trick of touchdowns.
Weigman beat out redshirt sophomore Max Johnson for QB1 during fall camp and continues to be on a tear at the start of the new season. The Aggies receive the ball to begin the second half.
