Where Does Aggies Conner Weigman Rank Among SEC QBs?

Quarterbacks in the SEC have been a subject of conversation, given that there's no Bryce Young leading the charge after a Heisman-caliber season.

Based on what little fans have to go off, Conner Weigman seems to be a cut above Max Johnson in the race for QB1 at Texas A&M

Sixth-year coach Jimbo Fisher is a man of mystery. In one breath, he'll say close to nothing. The next, he can't stop moving his lips, letting information spew left and right on the Aggies' future. Still, quarterback conversations often remain quiet until Week 1 rolls around, meaning Johnson still has the chance to claim the starting job.

That hasn't stopped multiple media outlets from previewing positions heading into the year. Quarterbacks in the SEC have been a subject of conversation, given that there's no Bryce Young leading the charge after a Heisman-caliber season.

As for Weigman, expect him to be a middle-of-the-pack option trending down simply due to limited production. All that could change by midseason, but the No. 7-11 range likely will be the de facto starting place. It was on 247 Sports' latest ranking, which ranked Weigman ninth heading into the SEC Media Days.

"Weigman is a former five-star and showed flashes of that high-end ability last fall as a true freshman after he was tossed in the fire during a tumultuous campaign. [Bobby ] Petrino's going to ask Weigman to play under control as a distributor given the wealth of talent the Aggies possess at the skill spots. But given Jimbo Fisher's insistence on never adapting or altering his offensive mindset throughout his tenure in College Station, slotting Weigman in the top half of the conference, at this point, would be placing a heavy wager on a coach who hasn't shown yet that he's willing to be hands-off offensively and let his new chef whip up his favorite dish." - 247 Sports' Brad Crawford

In five appearances last season, Weigman excelled as a freshman learning on the fly. His best game came against Ole Miss when he completed 63 percent of his passes for 338 yards and four TDs in a 31-28 loss. Weigman's maturation in the huddle was also a factor in the Aggies' 38-23 upset over No. 5 LSU in the season finale.

While his 55.3 percent completion rate must improve, but an 8-0 touchdown to interception ratio is a step forward for a program that hasn't featured consistency at quarterback since Kellen Mond's senior season. Petrino, who was hired from Missouri State, is meant to elevate the position to create stability well past Weigman's tenure in College Station.

While No. 9 to some might be considered low, Weigman's was ranked two spots higher than Auburn's Payton Thorne, three higher than Missouri's Brady Cook, and five higher than Florida's Graham Mertz, all passers with at least one year of starting reps. He ranked one spot below Ole Miss' Jaxson Dart, who struggled with consistency last season during his first year in Oxford.

Arkansas' KJ Jefferson moved up one spot from last season's rankings after totaling 33 touchdowns last season. LSU's Jayden Daniels ranked second following a 10-win season under first-year coach Brian Kelly, while former N.C. State quarterback Devin Leary was listed as No. 3 for his new school Kentucky. Tennessee's Joe Milton and South Carolina's Spencer Rattler rounded out the top five.

Mississippi State's Will Rogers, who's led all SEC in total passing yards (10,689) and touchdowns (82) since 2020, was the biggest surprise at seventh behind Georgia newcomer Carson Beck.
