Aggies RB De'Von Achane Suffers Knee Injury In Dolphins Win Over Giants
De'Von Achane was known for proving the doubters wrong during his three-year stay at Texas A&M.
Well, that, plus his lightning-in-a-bottle speed left opponents gasping for air.
But every player undergoes a speed bump at some point in their tenure. Achane's blip comes by proving his durability won't be a concern for the Miami Dolphins.
The rookie running back suffered a knee injury in Miami's 31-16 win over the New York Giants Sunday. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel declined to say whether the rookie would miss time or was undergoing an MRI for further evaluation. Achane's status for Sunday's matchup against the Carolina Panthers is now uncertain.
"When I don't know, I literally don't spend any time forecasting either way," McDaniel said. "It's just because we're getting more information. But I find it trivial to even forecast until I get all the information. So I really don't know."
According to reporters, Achane seemed to be in good spirits during postgame interviews at his locker. He even joked about Tyreek Hill's record-setting reception in which he clocked in at 22 MPH.
Hill, one of the NFL's top pass-catchers, has been considered the league's fastest player when given the runway, but Achane might surpass the "Cheetah" for top-end speed by the season's end.
“First of all, why’d you get caught?” Achane said of his conversation with Hill. “Twenty-two (MPH), but you got caught? It doesn’t matter.”
Few rookies have been as consistent as Achane to begin their NFL careers. After a quiet first two weeks, the former Aggie exploded onto the scene, rushing for 203 yards and scoring four touchdowns in a 70-20 win over the Denver Broncos.
Since then, Achane has rushed for 101 and 151 yards in games against the Buffalo Bills and Giants. His 460 rushing yards rank second in the NFL behind San Francisco 49ers Christian McCaffery, while his 12.1 yards per attempt lead the league among qualified rushers with at least 10 carries.
"He's such a tough kid. It was kind of tough to read, so we needed to evaluate more and that's what we're doing today," said McDaniel.
Miami (4-1) might be one of the few teams in the NFL that can lose a talent like Achane and still produce on the ground. The Dolphins feature veteran Raheem Mostert, who leads the league in rushing touchdowns with seven scores. Miami also could activate Jeff Wilson, who spent the past four games on the injured reserve with multiple injuries.
Drafted in the third round last April, Achane remains a favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year, alongside Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud, Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson and Los Angeles Rams receiver Puka Nacua.
During his final season at A&M, Achane rushed for a career-high 1,105 yards and eight touchdowns. He finished his Aggie career with a record-setting 215-yard performance in a 38-23 upset win over then-No. 5 LSU.
