WATCH: Texas A&M's Devon Achane Records Top RB 40-Time At NFL Combine

Devon Achane proved that he was fast during Sunday's drills at the NFL combine.
In this story:

While Texas A&M Aggies running back Devon Achane didn't break John Ross III's 4.22 40-time record, he still walked away as one of the NFL Scouting Combine's biggest winners.

Achane posted the fastest 40-time among all running backs at the combine Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium and the second fastest of the weekend. The former Texas A&M speedster kicked things off as the first runner to perform with a 4.34 40 unofficial 40-time on his first run.

Achane sped things up on his second run, posting an unofficial 4.32-time. Both of Achane's runs were the fastest among prospects, with only Alabama's Jahmyr Gibbs and East Carolina's Keaton Mitchell reaching sub-4.4 speeds.

Michigan cornerback DJ Turner III finished with the fastest 40-time of the event at 4.26 seconds. Compared to last season, Achane would have finished fifth among times, trailing only Kalon Barnes (4.23), Tariq Woolen (4.26), Turner and Maryland defensive back Jakorian Bennet (4.3).

Achane did not participate in the broad jump but did post a 33-inch vertical. He also looked smooth running receiving drills and did not drop a pass during reps.

A three-year role-player for the Aggies, Achane finished with his first 1,000-yard season during the 2022 campaign and averaged 5.8 yards per run. He also was an effective pass-catcher, recording 36 catches for 196 yards and three scores in 10 games.

Achane was named a first-team All-SEC running back for his efforts this past season, as well as a first-team all-purpose back. Achane averaged 6.4 yards per play for his career and scored 21 rushing touchdowns.

“People always say I’m small, but I’ve been dealing with that my whole life,” Achane said. “I feel like my size doesn’t mean anything. I’ve been good in my career this far. I do break a lot of tackles. I’m not the type to take any head-on tackles. I feel like I have a natural ability to avoid tackles, and that’s something I’m very, very good at.”

Achane is considered one of the top running backs in the class, often seeing his name linked near Gibbs and UCLA's Zach Charbonnet. Texas running back and reigning Doak Walker Award winner Bijan Robinson is the only prospect expected to garner first-round interest.

Among NFL scouts, Achane is expected to hear his name called somewhere on Day 2, likely near the end of the second round or the start of the third. His 40-time might solidify his top-50 grade among teams when on the clock.

Achane, along with defensive backs Jaylon Jones and Antonio Johnson, will have the chance to test one more time at the Aggies' pro day on March 28.
