Aggies TE Donovan Green OUT For Spring Game
COLLEGE STATION -- For the most part, Texas A&M will be at full strength for the annual Maroon and White game. The key phrase in that sentence?
Most part.
Aggies coach Jimbo Fisher announced tight end Donovan Green would miss Saturday's spring game after rolling over his ankle last weekend during the team's scrimmage. He is currently the only full participant of spring practice that's expected to be inactive.
A native of Dickinson, Green served primarily as the No. 2 tight end behind veteran Max Wright in 2022. He appeared in nine games and totaled 22 receptions for 233 yards with two TDs.
Green and fellow freshman tight end Jak Johnson have been two standouts in spring practice after promising freshman campaigns. Wright, a sixth-year senior, said not only has the duo improved as route-runners but also as vocal leaders in the huddle.
"These guys aren't freshmen anymore," Wright said Wednesday. "Anytime you come in a freshman, you kind of feel like you have to pay your dues before you're allowed to be a leader, which isn't true, but these guys have stepped into their role like 'hey, we're some guys that are going to look to not just be a part of this offense this year, but be center points of it."
Wright said the tight position should have a more expanded role under new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino. Hired away from Missouri State — and later UNLV — Pentrio's intricate personnel groups feature a variety of formations and pre-snap motions to keep the defense guessing.
“I really like how (Petrino) uses the tight end in deception in terms of motions. Multiple motions in different directions at different times," said Wright. "Disguising different alignments for different receivers by moving two guys at once and creating a single receiver side."
Green should be a factor in the passing elements come Week 1 this season, but he also was a standout blocker during his freshman campus. As one of the lone bright spots on the line, Green helped junior Devon Achane rush for a career-high 1,102 yards and 8 TDs during the woeful 5-7 season.
Fisher said he's been encouraged by the progress of the younger offensive linemen in spring drills but also credited sophomore guard Kam Dewberry, senior guard Layden Robinson and junior tackle Reuben Fatheree for their development.
“I’ve been very pleased this spring,” Fisher said. “I thought we made some huge development this spring. I thought some guys are really coming on and playing well. The young guys are really developing.
“Remy (Remington Strickland) has had a tremendous spring. (Mark) Nabou played center the whole spring and has had a tremendous spring. I’m really happy with him.
“I’m really excited about that whole group on the offensive line.”
Kickoff from Kyle Field Saturday is slated for 3 p.m.
