Halftime: Aggies Lead Over Auburn, QB Conner Weigman Leaves Early
COLLEGE STATION -- Texas A&M might be leading 6-3 over Auburn heading into the second half, but the offense could be without its leading man for the remainder of the game.
Sophomore quarterback Conner Weigman left with just over four minutes remaining in the second quarter with what appeared to be a lower-body injury. Weigman's return is questionable.
Weigman, who won the starting job over Max Johnson this preseason, has been near perfect at home, completing 67 percent of his passes for seven touchdowns and zero turnovers. On Saturday, he led A&M into Tiger territory twice, but was forced to settle for field goals.
The Tigers' defensive front held the Aggies to a third-down stop inside their own 10-yard line. Weigman, who was drilled before the whistle blew, was slow to get up and immediately headed to the medical tent.
He finished the first half 8-of-14 passing for 75 yards. The Aggies' offense has gone 2-of-7 on third-down conversions and totaled three consecutive three-and-outs to close out the first half.
Randy Bond made a pair of field goals — one from 51 and another from 32 yards out — on the first two drives to give the Aggies an early lead. Auburn, which ranks 18th nationally total yards allowed under first-year coordinator Ron Roberts, held A&M to 121 yards of offense.
Auburn's Payton Thorne remains a question mark for the passing attack under first-year coach Hugh Freeze. A&M's defensive front has pounced on the former Michigan State starter, recording four sacks through two quarter.
During the second quarter, Thorne tried to find Damari Alston on what looked to be a pitch. Tyreek Chappell jarred the ball loose, leading to a 52-yard scoop-and-score by linebacker Edgerrin Cooper.
After further review, it was ruled that Alston was over the line of scrimmage, thus becoming an incomplete pass. A&M has held Auburn to 112 total yards of offense and 1-of-7 on third-down conversions.
Johnson, who started three games last season before suffering a season-ending thumb injury, is the primary backup for Weigman should be unable to return. The Aggies, who received the ball to begin the game, will start on defense following halftime.
