Texas A&M Hires San Diego State's Kyle Hoke As Defensive Analyst
Mike Elko is adding another member to his staff at Texas A&M entering offseason workouts.
According to reports, A&M is hiring Kyle Hoke as a defensive analyst. It is unclear if another coach will switch roles with the program internally following the departure of defensive backs coach/pass game coordinator Wesley McGriff, who recently announced he would be returning to Auburn.
Kyle Hoke, the nephew of former San Diego State and Michigan coach Brady Hoke, spent the previous four seasons on the Aztecs' staff, most recently serving as the team's safety coach. Before he arrived in the Mountain West, Kyle Hoke coached at Western Michigan, Army John Carrol, South Carolina and Indiana State.
Hoke played at Ball State from 2008-11. In four seasons with the Cardinals, he racked up 68 total tackles and an interception. He later began coaching at Western Michigan after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2012.
Elko, who was hired back in December to replace Jimbo Fisher, went 16-9 during his two seasons at Duke, winning ACC Coach of the Year in 2021 after guiding the Blue Devils to a 9-4 record. Duke began the season hot with a 28-7 upset win over then-No. 9 Clemson and started off 4-0 before losing to Notre Dame.
After losing Riley Leonard to injury, the Blue Devils dropped four of their last eight games to finish 8-5. Elko was already in College Station prior to Duke's 17-10 win in the Birmingham Bowl over Troy.
Elko's staff is near its completion. The decision on what will happen with McGriff's post remains a mystery. Elko, however, has made the essential hires at offensive and defensive coordinator, bringing over Kansas State's Collin Klein and Florida's Jay Bateman.

On top of commanding the offense, Klein, who finished third in Heisman voting behind A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, will coach quarterbacks. Bateman, who previously spent two seasons as the Gators' linebacker coach, will retain the same title.
The Aggies open the 2024 regular season at Kyle Field against Notre Dame on Aug. 31.
