BREAKING: Texas A&M Aggies Expected To Fire Head Coach Jimbo Fisher
According to multiple reports, Texas A&M is expected to part ways with Jimbo Fisher as early as Sunday morning.
The Aggies secured bowl eligibility for the first time in two seasons on Saturday night with a 51-10 win over Mississippi State and have two games remaining to close out the regular season. It was unclear as of this time who will take over as the interim coach for games against Abilene Christian and No. 19 LSU.
The news was first reported by TexAgs and later confirmed by The Athletic's Bruce Feldman.
Fisher will be owed $76 million upon his firing, which is a record amount of a buyout paid to a head coach. That number is more than double the known buyout paid to a fired college head coach.
Fisher was extended during the 2021 season to a brand new contract worth $95 million in hopes of keeping him away from the LSU opening. Per reports, A&M plans to honor Fisher's contract in full.
Hired away from Florida State in 2017, Fisher was expected to bring championship goals to College Station. His tenure began on a promising note with a 9-4 finish in 2018 and led the Aggies to an Orange Bowl win and top-five finish in the AP Poll during the 2020 season.
But A&M never found a rhythm during Fisher's time in College Station. He never posted a 10-win season and finished his time with the Aggies with a 45-25 record.
Since winning the Orange Bowl in 2020, Texas A&M has gone 19-15. The Aggies had not won the SEC West during Fisher's tenure.
